04.20.07 Montery Bay Aquarium Research Institute visit

On 4/20/07 the CalSNAME club went to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in Moss Landing. We enjoyed a tour of their research ships including the Western Flyer, their 117 foot SWATH vessel. The pictures shown here feature the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) called the Tiburon which is housed in the Western Flyer. The pictures show the control room from which the ROV is operated and the mechanical arm on the Tiburon which is operated from the control room.

Additionally we toured many other areas of the facility including the video annotating room where all the incredible hi-definition video footage from the deep sea research trips are catalogued. We saw their outstanding machine shop, fatigue testing area, and research rooms including the pressure testing vessel and the 10 meter water tank. Everyone on the trip thoroughly enjoyed it, learned a lot, and had a great time.

03.16.07 Catamaran Ferry Boat Ride, Vallejo, CA

On 3/16, CalSNAME enjoyed a tour of a high-speed water-jet powered catamaran ferry boat and ride from Vallejo to SF and back. We got a tour of the engine room, jet room, water-jets, and wheel house (bridge) from our own member and ferry boat captain, Jon Elkin. The pictures shown here include those from inside the engine room, and of the huge 16 cylinder diesel backup engine from onshore.

03.08.07 Day at the Bay Model in Sausalito, CA

On 2/16/06 the CalSNAME club went to the Bay Model in Sausalito, CA. The Bay Model is a working hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta System administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is a 3-D model capable of simulating tides and currents covering an area of 1.5 acres in size and represents an area from the Pacific Ocean to Sacramento and Stockton, including: the San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun Bays and a portion of the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta. We took a guided tour of the facility given by a park ranger. It was an interesting and educational fieldtrip and we learned a lot about our watershed and the ecological processes of our local water system...

Robert Seah awarded 'Best Graduate Student Paper Award'

Shown in the picture is SNAME President Roger Compton presenting the Graduate Student Paper Honor Prize to Robert Seah of the University of California at Berkeley at the Annual SNAME Meeting on October 12, 2006. Executive Director Phil Kimball is shown in the background. His paper was entitled "Resonant Modes of Rectangular Twin Hulls". It examined properties of a type of resonance possible in semi-constrained regions of water found in such designs as a moonpool in a drill vessel, multi-hulls, and multi-leg offshore platforms. Robert attended the annual meeting as a Cal-SNAME representative along with Arnt Fredriksen and Frederik Dukan, two exchange students from Norway. Congrats Robert!
